The section Air, Land and Water Resources is dedicated to study the interaction between the atmosphere, the natural environment and the anthroposphere. The focus is on direct and indirect effects on functioning and stability of terrestrial ecosystems, on biosphere-atmosphere exchange of greenhouse gases and reactive gases and particles, and on the effects of toxic components of the atmosphere on plant growth and human health. The research includes important feedbacks between the terrestrial biosphere and the global climate.

Methane from landfills is a significant contributor to climate change from the waste sector. DTU Environment has through cooperation with several partners developed and tested so-called Biocovers to mitigate these emissions. Biocovers are going to be installed on a number of Danish landfills in the near future. Accurate measurements of methane emissions from these sites are necessary to design the Biocovers and to document their mitigation performance. A key issue is assessing the emission dynamics with robust, continuous methane and carbon dioxide flux measurements. Research into these problems will be central to the research of the PhD student.

Responsibilities and tasks

You will engage in research directly relevant to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The research will be done within an inspiring international work environment with colleagues with strong experience on the topics, you will be working on. Advanced state of the art laboratory and field research equipment and facilities will be available to reach your research aims. These tools include a “mobile analytical platform”, which is a vehicle fitted with high-precision gas analysers, GNSS system and a mobile eddy covariance station.

  • You will obtain valuable experience in the most effective state-of-the-art quantification methods of fugitive greenhouse gas emissions
  • You will contribute to the highly important effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • The results of your work will be of immediate interest to Danish authorities

Qualifications
Candidates should have a master’s degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering.

You should be a highly motivated student, who is interested in doing cutting-edge research and is interested in fieldwork. Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge and experience within the following areas:

  • Quantification and modelling of fugitive emissions
  • Eddy covariance measurements and footprint modelling
  • Environmental assessment of waste management technologies
  • Mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions

A driver’s license is required for this position.

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
