The PhD student will be financed by CLUNATRA projectwhich is an ERC-ADV grant from EU, which is collaborating under the umbrella of V-Sustain. The PhD student will work in the section SurfCat at DTU Physics and mainly focus on making mass-selected cluster/ nanoparticles on our single and dual magnetron cluster sources. Both are connected to a fully equipped UHV system with a broad range of surface science characterization tolls such as XPS, ISS, SEM, STM. Prepared samples can also be characterized ex situ using TEM. The targeted reactions are primarily for conversion of sustainable energy so it can either be electrochemical oxidation of water forming hydrogen or electrochemical reduction of CO2 or N2, but also thermal heterogeneous catalysis for CO2 hydrogenation into methanol or Nitrogen into ammonia.
A significant part of V-SUSTAIN takes place at Experimental Surface and Nanomaterials Physics at the Department of Physics at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Here we enjoy a social, open and transparent scientific environment. The students will be able to take full advantage of the large number of personnel working in adjacent fields of investigation, from surface science on single crystals to the testing of high surface area catalysts in reactors.
The work will be focused on the synthesis, testing and characterisation of new catalysts using state of the art in-house facilities especially the UHV based systems for mass-selected cluster/nanoparticles generation. It relies heavily on a close collaboration between theory and experiment, where the most promising catalysts are identified by in-silico screening.

The successful candidate will have obtained excellent grades in his/her Bachelor and Master degree. He/she should also be well-motivated, hardworking and willing and able to work as part of a team. Candidates for the PhD position should have a Masters’ degree in Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science by the time they commence the project. Candidates who has shown interest/had experience with a surface science approach may be preferred.
Approval and Enrolment of PhD Students
The scholarship for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU, for example in Mathematics, Physics and Informatics. Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years and the PhD thesis must be delivered during this period. The position can start anytime in spring/summer 2020.
